H-FABP is an early marker of acute cardiac syndrome. When used together with other cardiac biomarkers – mainly cardiac troponins and natriuretic peptides – it can provide valuable additional information to support the diagnosis of patients with chest pain.
H-FABP is applied in emergency triage of patients with acute coronary syndromes. It could be used to identify patients with a low risk of AMI and consequently accelerate their discharge from hospital. In addition, H-FABP has been identified as a biomarker that is useful in regard to the prediction of adverse prognosis in patients with pulmonary embolism.
H-FABP alone is not specific enough as a marker for cardiac injuries since it is expressed also in other tissues than heart. However, as part of a multi-marker panel H-FABP brings additional value in supporting clinical diagnostics decisions.
